As we prepare for a strong El Niño winter, some regions of the United States likely will get more snowfall than usual. The House of Representatives’ continuing resolution bill ensures funding for disaster recovery projects and aid for the next few months, but given what it took to get there, it’s understandable that states may be concerned about how long the stability will last.
States deserve clarity. Federal lawmakers should provide them guidance on how to prepare proactively for natural disasters and their consequences. States should partner with private-sector professionals who understand how to avoid catastrophes and minimize damages when they occur. Doing so could save American lives and livelihoods, and is cost-effective in the long run.
